Silicon dioxide, also known as silica (from the Latin silex), is a chemical compound that is an oxide of silicon with the chemical formula SiO2. It has been known since ancient times. It is most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz. It is manufactured in several forms including fused quartz, crystal, fumedsilica (or pyrogenicsilica), colloidal-silica, silicagel, and aerogel.
It is not only used in the production of glass for windows, drinking glasses, beverage bottles, but has many other uses.
